Story Behind the Art:
Most Moroccan artisans vary in education from the 8th to 12th grade level. Instead of attending college, they choose to carry on the traditional craft of their fathers and grandfathers. To learn the craft, they enter an apprenticeship on a part time basis as a teenager. In speaking to a Moroccan artisan, one will find that he/she is very proud of their art form. If the father is an artisan then the son will almost always learn the father’s trade. It is the responsibility of the son to look after his family and he inherits the secrets of the craft from his father or grandfather. ‘Harfa’ means craft. It is important to keep the craft in the family.
